Flickr now uses OSM!

Flickr a popular photo and video sharing website is now using Openstreetmap for geotagging photos . Check out Davao City and Metro Manila Flickr geotags. Thanks to Maning for suggesting the use of OSM to the Flickr peeps. And thanks to you guys (OSM contributors) for improving the map!

This is just one of the many benefits of crowd-sourced maps and I hope to see more sites putting OSM to good use.

Magtuod to Tacunan Road Mapped!

A relatively new OSM contributor ner0 (a.k.a. Michael Afrondoza) has added a nice and long road that connects Magtuod (Maa) to Tacunan (Mintal). This have been previously unmapped for two reasons...first, it does not have a good satellite map coverage (so tracing is out of the question) and second, the road is definitely not a place you'd typically pass by everyday. Fortunately, Michael and his biking buddies were able to visit this area during one of their weekend escapades. I see this as a good way to push GPS technology (and GPS-referenced maps) to the local community, areas previously unmapped can easily be updated by anyone carrying a GPS or a GPS enabled phone, driving, biking or walking around and simply load the data back to OSM after the trip. Local biking enthusiasts can definitely make use of GPS-referenced maps for planning their trips was well as mark areas that should be avoided (safety-first!). And instead of telling people you biked this far or this fast or this high...you can just send them the tracks and let it speak for itself :)....thanks for the road Mike!

Davao Mapping Party: Post Party Report

Participants of the 1st Davao Mapping Party drove around town, took notes, asked around and practically having a wonderful time while contributing to the awesome Openstreetmap.org project. The teams covered close to 250 km adding POIs along the way as well as new access roads and subdivisions.
  • team_bura(blue): Matina Aplaya
  • team_dinuguan(cyan): Catalunan Grande/parts of Mintal and Catalunan Peqeuño
  • team_lechon(green): Sasa/Panacan Area
  • team_sulatkamay(yellow): Bangkal
  • team_rapidorapido(red): Toril and parts of Buhangin/Cabantian
The team names should give you an idea what some of the guys had for lunch :). By late afternoon the teams finally convened at Chicco de Cafe which provided the mappers a cool lounge to share mapping stories, problems encountered while mapping as well as new POI discoveries. I bumped into a few issues while rendering the tracks, so I was not able to show the group the rendered tracks that day. I spent the whole sunday sorting it out. Here is the cleaned-up version guys..enjoy! (pictures and other stuff on the next blog)

Thanks to all who helped!

While the gang is busy mapping Davao City, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank those who helped them make this first Davao mapping party a reality.
